Stretching the Edges: What Leaving Our Comfort Zone Taught Us About Leadership

Mark: In October of 2019, I invited four of my soul advisors to join me at an Airbnb near Orlando for a three-day mastermind retreat.

At the time, it felt bold. Visionary. A little risky.

We weren’t gathering just to brainstorm business tactics or set goals. We were aligning—deeply—with the greater mission behind our work. We cooked together. Shared meals and breakthroughs. Talked late into the night about the call we each felt to serve something larger than ourselves.

That small retreat planted a seed.

Fast forward to today, and that seed has grown into MetaMind—a thriving mastermind community of transformational leaders who come together every month to grow, collaborate, and elevate one another’s impact.

And this week, that vision has expanded beyond anything I could have imagined back then.

Renee and I just checked into two beautiful homes, each with 11 bedrooms, to host 25 of our MetaMind clients for four days of deep connection, reflection, and real-time growth. Just over half of our members are joining us in person—and we know these four days will be a turning point not just for them, but for us.

Renee: It has taken a lot to prepare for this event.

We’ve been planning and coordinating for months—menus, logistics, room assignments, transportation, client materials, and all the behind-the-scenes details that make in-person magic possible.

As someone who naturally holds the logistics, the timelines, and the structure, it’s easy for me to get pulled into the doing. And sometimes, that means losing sleep. Not because I’m anxious or afraid something will go wrong, but because I care. Deeply.

I want everyone to feel seen. Cared for. Fully supported.

And still no matter how much you plan, something always stretches you beyond your expectations.

Mark: This week, I’m being stretched in all the right ways.

As part of Nick Villareal’s Back to Wild 30-Day Reset, we were each challenged to choose two characteristics to embody—one hard, one soft. I chose Discipline and Presence.

To me, they’re two sides of the same coin.

Discipline keeps me rooted. Presence keeps me open.

Discipline helps me stay focused, grounded, and fully show up for others. Presence allows me to listen, to adapt, and to respond with empathy and clarity in the moment. And both are required to lead powerfully.

It takes discipline to lead when you’re tired. To hold space when you don’t have all the answers. It takes presence to truly see people. To witness transformation unfolding and trust the process—even when it doesn’t follow your plan.

Renee: Hosting 25 leaders in two homes for four days isn’t just an event, it’s an initiation.

It asks us to lead from the front, from the middle, and from the sidelines. It invites us to grow with our clients, not just for them. It demands we hold space not only for their breakthroughs, but for our own.

And honestly? It pushes us out of our comfort zone.

Not because we’re unprepared. But because we’re committed to evolving alongside the vision—not staying where it’s safe, but stepping where we’re called.

And we’re doing it together as partners.

Over the years, we’ve learned we’re rarely stretched in the same way at the same time. One of us grounds while the other grows and then we switch. That rhythm of expansion and support is part of what makes this partnership work.

Mark: If you’re building something meaningful with a partner—whether that’s a business, a community, or a family—you know this feeling.

The edge. The unknown. The moment when you’ve done all the prep… and now it’s time to trust.

This week, we’re walking that edge together.

And what we’re discovering, again, is that real growth always lives just outside the comfort zone.

Renee: So wherever you are in your journey…

If your heart is pounding a little faster… If your calendar feels a little too full… If your next move feels a little too big…

Take a breath.

You’re not failing. You’re growing.

Growth is messy. Leadership is inconvenient. Stretching isn’t always sexy, but it’s where the magic happens.

Mark and Renee: Leadership isn’t about never feeling stretched. It’s about knowing how to stay present, stay disciplined, and keep showing up anyway.

Here’s to the stretch. To the growth. And to the vision that’s always bigger than the comfort zone.

Whatever your stretch looks like—scaling your business, hiring your first VA, setting new boundaries, launching that bold new offer, showing up more visibly—know that it counts.

The invisible work you’re doing behind the scenes is leadership, too.

You’re not just running a business or supporting your family. You’re growing, your improving lives, and you’re building a legacy.
