The Joy-Fueled Journey: Why Play Is Part of Our Purpose

Mark:

As we count down the final weeks of school, it hits us: in less than two weeks, Eden and Xen will finish 9th grade and head into their sophomore year of high school.

We’re not sure how time has flown this fast… but we do know, we don’t want to miss it.

Even as our work grows and the impact of our clients keeps expanding, we’ve learned that joyful integration isn’t just a nice idea, it’s a non-negotiable part of our mission.

And we’re here to live that mission, with joy.

Living the Mission (and the Magic) as a certified facilitator of Marian Head’s Revolutionary Agreements: A Personal Path to Peace on Earth, two agreements anchor this season of our lives:

  • I agree to live my mission.
  • I agree to lighten up.

At first glance, those might seem like opposites.

Live your mission? That sounds serious. Purposeful. Focused.

Lighten up? That feels playful, spontaneous… maybe even irresponsible.

But for us, they coexist beautifully.

The magic is in the integration.

We believe in world-changing businesses and dance parties in the kitchen: aligned action and epic downtime.

Because harmony doesn’t mean perfect balance. It means intentional living.

Renee:

Since they were babies, Eden and Xen have grown up alongside our business.

They’ve been raised at Disney, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and beaches all over Florida. They’ve traveled from the southernmost point of the Florida Keys to the cliffs of California and into the forests of Northern Ontario, Canada.

They’ve cruised, stayed in beautiful resorts, and explored dozens of cities as we’ve spoken, masterminded, coached, and yes, vacationed.

As the “logistics department of joy,” I’ve always believed you can’t wait for life to calm down to start making memories. You build it right into the plan.

The lesson our kids have taught us?

Don’t just schedule fun. Make it part of our family culture.

That’s one of the reasons we created the Soulful Leadership Retreat in the winter months, so we could free up the rest of the year for more play, travel, and connection.

It’s also why we say yes to leading at the front, but never at the expense of our family or our sanity.

Because we believe you can lead boldly and live fully.

You can scale a business and still unplug for sunset walks, spontaneous beach trips, and long road trips with snacks stuffed in every bag.

And honestly? That’s been the secret to our longevity.

We built this life together.

And we designed it so our family could thrive inside it.

Mark:

Our clients have big missions: change lives, uplift humanity, awaken consciousness.

We are here for all of it.

But we also remind them:
- You’re allowed to rest.
- You’re allowed to play.
- You’re allowed to eat ice cream at 2 p.m. for no reason at all.

Because peace on earth isn’t only about outer work.

It’s also about inner presence.

And our families are not a distraction from our purpose—they are part of it.

Renee:

Life as entrepreneurs with twins in tow hasn’t always been easy.

Finances were tight early on. But I always prioritized fun. From free Saturday crafts at Home Depot, library storytimes, summer bowling passes, to chasing seagulls at the park… if it was fun and free, we were there.

And when we could splurge…It was Disney on Ice or annual theme park passes that we stretched for every possible visit.

I’ve always believed joy doesn’t belong in the “someday” category. It’s part of the plan.

Honestly? I am the plan.

The fun doesn’t happen unless I build it.

So yes, I’ve been known to pack five kinds of snacks, a business planner, and a swimsuit in the same bag. That’s leadership: showing up fully for our kids, our clients, and the memories we’ll talk about for years to come.

When I was diagnosed with cancer and told I should isolate to protect my health, I didn’t listen. Cancer taught me to choose joy, even when fear tries to take the wheel.

As entrepreneurs, we’ve never waited for the “perfect” time to enjoy life. We packed the laptop, booked the Airbnb, and worked from the road more times than I can count.

One of my favorite memories?

During COVID, we found a shockingly cheap mansion on VRBO. We brought our laptops, homeschooled the kids, and built our “Zoom school” empire from a fat Florida mansion. It was our wildest, weirdest, most fun business vacation yet.

And now? The kids are 15. Just like that.

Time is fleeting.

But joy? That’s renewable.

And I’ll keep choosing it on land, at sea (preferably somewhere with bad WiFi so I can totally unplug), and everywhere in between.

Mark & Renee:

This summer, we’re still hosting calls.

We’re still coaching leaders and running MetaMind.

But we’re also chasing sunsets, sneaking away for family adventures, and building memories we’ll never regret.

Our definition of success?

  • Changing the world and roasting marshmallows.
  • Leading leaders and losing ourselves in laughter.
  • Hitting our business goals and soaking up the moments that matter most.

So here’s our invitation.

Where can you integrate more joy into your purpose?

Where can you live your mission and lighten up at the same time?

The journey is the point. And the joy you allow along the way is part of your leadership.
